Day of Black Sun- Avatar Press Art

Sorry about the wait. I've been so swamped at work lately that I didn't even notice this episode had already aired. To be completely honest, I just plain forgot about posting this in general, until I was reminded by a fellow deviant artist. So Kudos to you Silentjosh847!

Anyway, I was commissioned by the wonderful people at Nickelodeon to do this piece of press art for the big two part battle taking place right in the middle of the 3rd season entitled The Day of Black Sun.

As usual, I did the 3 preliminary designs, one was approved and moved forward with. In this case it ended up being more like 5 preliminary designs simply because my fickle mind couldn't settle on one specific layout for a couple of the ideas.

Then a final pencil version is done. I was obviously a bit rusty at drawing the characters at this pont because none of them look quite right. Many thanks to Bryan Konietzko for putting them back on model for me.

Then the colored version. I did two different backgrounds for this one because I wasn't quite sure whether I liked the full eclipse or the partial eclipse better.

After all that, the very kind and talented Bryan Konietzko went over the painted version and sweetened the whole thing with subtle tweaks that really made the final piece look 20 jabillion times better than I ever could have done. And that's the final version you see at the top. Thanks for making me look good Bryan!

Hope you guys like it!

I orginally wanted to wait to give you a commnet until I've looked through every bit of art you've posted. And then I glanced at the clock and I realized if I did such my little brother would not be picked up from school and of that happened certain people I live with may never let me see the light of day again. I also realize informing you your work is amazeing is also somewhat redundent (sp?) because you obviously already know this. But at the same time I tell myself I would want people constantly giving me praise for my work, though i am concieted. ^^;; But whats the harm and the worest thing i'll do is take a few seconds of your time. Heh...So tpo the point of things your art works is downright amazeing! And I could go on and tell you such and such, but I figured i've rambled enough. xD ^^

Hot!

...and speaking of hot, I was grilled at length at an Xmas party by an adult Avatar fan who was mighty upset there's no more after season 3. (Correct, yes?)

Very correct Chris. Season three is the END end. But you didn't hear that from me.

bummer

i was hoping it would be one of those shows that breaks the mold when it comes to "cartoons"

along with others like batman animated, afro samurai, hell boy, jla, etc.

ya know more along the lines of pixar type shows that any viewer would like

man, only 3? 3 box sets?

i mean didn't anybody see the attendance at last year's SDCC panel?

there was a HUGE following for it

those fans were really involved in that world

i saw it and i haven't seen 1 ep !

i have an idea: howabout dtv movies?

the continuing advs of avatar?

btw, what was the reason?

again, bummer

also, howabout a new ariel drawing from you, you haven't done one since last year?

thankx lauren! :)

Lauren said...

Well, it is one of those shows that breaks the mold in that when the creators wrote it, they did so with a definite beginning, middle and end. They told the story they wanted to tell, and now it's over. I have to give them props for not compromising the material and agreeing to another season just for the money. It's their property and I think they did the right thing. I'd rather see a good show go out with class that peter away into mediocre episodes until it gets canceled.

i agree with you on that one

so ariel :)

wow. for a girl you sure let a lot of people call you "man". its cause everyone knows girls can't draw action stuff. get a clue lauren. stop drawing such amazing stuff so people think you are a girl again :p

Amazing artwork for Avatar! It's a shame that the series will end after Book 3, but I agree that it's better to let it end well than just stretch it for more profit. Don't fail me, writier!
I'm curious... how long have you been drawing? Did you ever go to art school??

I have been drawing since I was very young, but I probably didn't start seriously constantly as a hobby until I was about 8 or 9 years old. I never went to any specialized art school. I did go to college for animation training, but they didn't teach me how to draw, just how to animate.

Awesome, im a fellow Avatard. Its my favorite show. Its got every element I enjoy in a show.

Uncle Iroh is the best. I cant wait to see him all buffed out as the Dragon of the West.

Hi Lauren.....i love your work.....i was wondering if you could answer me a technical question :) is very important for me

How do you get your pencil line finished ??? (i mean...do you stetch freely first, than erase old lines, do you use light tables, do you put one paper over the older paper and make lines over it, do you use ruler with curves ....how to get this perfect lines with pencil??)

tnxxxxx
SEE YA!!!!!!

Lauren said...

I do a rough sketch on one piece of paper, then I use a light box and a new piece of paper to make the final as clean as possible. Then I scan it and make any final fixes and erasures in photoshop. I use rulers for any lines that need to be really straight, but I don't use any curves. I've never been able to make those things work for me.
