5 Different Attempts at the Same Friggin' Drawing

These are essentially me trying to make something look fancy with color and failing. I had a vague idea of the pose I wanted but couldn't seem to get it right so I drew a few different passes hoping I would be happy with one of them. I'm wasn't.This was the first try. For starters, the original drawing was wonky, and then I messed it up even more in the coloring. I actually had to photoshop in a nose for her cuz I completely messed that up. The only part I liked were the fingers on her right hand.
This was the second try, and she turned out the best . . . on paper . . . but the worst when scanned. I had to bump up her levels in photoshop to make her look less drab and a little closer to the original. This one was probably the closest to what I was trying to achieve Her nose was a happy accident. It just came out of nowhere. Hell, the whole thing was a happy accident because I obviously was not able to repeat it in any of the rest.
The third of the series and definitely my least favorite. Quite a blow to the confidence to go from the previous one to this piece of crap. She's a little too jolly green giant and she's drawn terribly. There is nothing good I have to say about this.
I've really got nothing to say about this one. She was the fourth one I colored. I was supposed to get better as I went but that didn't really happen. I peaked with the blue one and the rest was downhill.
And the final one. She was the first one I drew and the last one I colored. I had originally given up on her because I kept f'ing the drawing up. I'm sure everyone can see the multitude of pencil lines beneath the marker. But since the other four were so lackluster I figured it couldn't possibly be that much worse. And it wasn't. But it wasn't much better either. Oh woe is me.

Huntress

I crapped this out at work the other day. Then I inked her in my very non committal "not sure if I really want to shade her completely" sort of way. Hence her side is in shadow, but for some reason the arm tucked behind that side is completely lit. I messed up. Are we really surprised? But look! No Post-its! When I win one on the pencil side, I lose one on the ink side.
So, usually I just draw something, place whatever item in whatever hand it works best in for the drawing, and hope for the best. And for a second there I was proud of myself for making her right handed without even intending to. Then I remembered I always made her left handed in JLU. Then I wasn't happy anymore. But it doesn't really matter, because everyone else made her right handed anyway. It was just my little unnecessary addition. I guess that's a neat little piece of trivia. You know Lauren boarded that section IF: #1 It sucks. #2 Huntress is left handed.

Another Ariel

Just another Ariel. Still doesn't quite look like her, but oh well. I'll keep trying.

Mars

I started this drawing with the intention of coloring it using different shades of only one color. It didn't quite turn out that way. Why? Because I SUPER DUPER SUCK at coloring. Then I thought I would just try to really make the fire stand out and cast dark shadows on her. That didn't happen either. Why? Because I SUPER DUPER SUCK at coloring. Prismacolor markers are hard. Or may be I just SUPER DUPER SUCK at coloring.

The Major

Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. This is the Stand Alone Complex rendition in her action suit. Slightly more practical than the pink strapless deal with the leather jacket and thigh highs. But only slightly. And look! She can shoot left handed! I guess prosthetic bodies can be ambidextrous. Or maybe I just didn't think ahead before I drew it. I prefer the former to the latter.

Jessica Rabbit

Yes, I know, I know. I'm drawing on the wrong side of the paper. But the drawing on the other side was so f'd up I just had to turn it over and try again. This was drawn at work with my collection of different colored sharpees from the supply room, and a couple prismacolor pencils, also from the supply room. And a piece of superman storyboard paper, not from the supply room. High quality materials if I may say so myself.

Just figured I'd start practicing.

Poison Ivy...AGAIN!

Since my first drawing of Poison Ivy was such a snorefest, I thought I'd take another stab at her. She's very rough with her fair share of post-its. You also might notice the phantom image of storyboard panels behind her. That's because she was drawn on the back of an old piece of storyboard paper. That's right, nothing but the best for my artwork. She has since been inked and I have every intention of coloring her, but intentions do not a colored drawing make. So we'll see what happens.

Suzuka

So I decided to draw Suzuka from the Outlaw Star anime. I really liked this character a lot, don't ask me why. She was just kinda bad ass without the usual obnoxiousness that anime will often times add to their bad ass women. But anyway, I drew her and I thought it was good and I thought I was soooo cool . Then work was over and I went home. Then I came back in the morning and took another look at it .... and I hated it. Story of my life. So I tried again.


I like this one better. Not as many unneccesary wrinkles in clothing or strands of hair. Just simpler. More animation friendly. I like it that way.

MAGNUM

This is Magnum, the newest addition to my family. Named for the private investigator, not the gun. Though I must admit, the magnum has got to be one of the best ways to rid yourself of zombies outside of a rocket launcher. You might be wondering: "What is he?" Well, he's a dog. Aside from that, I don't know. Neither did the people at the shelter. And, as of yesterday, neither does the veterinarian. He is a mutt. But a cute one. The lovely photos are courtesy of Elaine and her snazzy digital camera. I am still living in the dark ages with my film camera.
Here he is again, snuggled up with tramp in his bed. Tramp looks much better in this photo. As of now he is missing his nose, his tail, and is well on his way to losing both ears.
The dramatic downshot of Magnum. He has a long body. This element only adds more mystery to the question: "What is he?"
