Even More Avatar

Jeez, don't I have an imagination? Can't I draw something other than the show I'm working on? Couldn't I try not sucking for once? The anwer to all these questions is NO.

Azula, the girl in the middle, is supposed to have flames on the tips of her fingers. But it seems I forgot to draw it in before I scanned it and I'm too lazy to scan it again. So let's pretend, shall we?

Mai, the girl at the top, is supposed to be flinging some sort of throwing knife. But since I haven't quite perfected the art of drawing the spinning batarang type object, and I'm obviously too lazy to look up reference, it didn't make it into the final. Yet. Just be happy I managed to remember Azula's fire this time.

How many pencils does it take to make a drawing?

Judging from this one.... too damn many. A couple shades of red, one blue, and some black. And ONE post-it!

Nausicaa

So I've finished all my work for the day job. And I finished all my work for the freelance job. So I finally have time to draw for something other than my job. I was watching Nausicaa a few weeks back and just jotted down this quick scribble as an idea for a future drawing. You can tell I wasn't very familiar with drawing ohms.

I wasn't able to draw this until today. I had to look at the dvd for the ohm reference. But it looks a bit closer to the actual design than the previous scribble. It was a struggle though. I'm sure you can tell from the many colored scribbles all over the poor ohm. It didn't help that the ohms were drawn differently in every shot I looked at on that dvd. Oh well. I tried.

Splinter Cell Neck Punch

This is what I drew while eating at Macaroni Grill today. It comes complete with Dr Pepper cup stain and the last portion of, our server, Taylor's name. I was trying to explain to Sam the hilarity of watching Sam Fisher punch a guy in the neck and KO him. And since it's the only free time drawing I've done in the past week, it's going up on the blog. Enjoy!

Azula

Seems that I tend to draw the characters I am most familiar with, which usually ends up being the characters from whatever show I am working on. This was the second try at Azula after the first attempt (below) failed. The only thing missing is her blue fire which I figured would be added in color. But since this image is not colored, NO FIRE!

This was the first Azula attempt. She's a little wonky wich is mostly only apparent when she is flipped over. Just don't look at her in a mirror. Please.

Long Time No Post

Well, I've made the jump from Warner Bros to Nickelodeon and it's been a pretty busy first week. I haven't been able to pay much attention to the blog lately so here's something I drew in a few minutes of free time I had today. And since I have nothing else to say, this might be a good time to thank everyone who has left me kind comments and linked me on their blogs. You really are too kind. REALLY. But thanks to you all. You make the whole blog experience worthwhile.

5 Different Attempts at the Same Friggin' Drawing

These are essentially me trying to make something look fancy with color and failing. I had a vague idea of the pose I wanted but couldn't seem to get it right so I drew a few different passes hoping I would be happy with one of them. I'm wasn't.This was the first try. For starters, the original drawing was wonky, and then I messed it up even more in the coloring. I actually had to photoshop in a nose for her cuz I completely messed that up. The only part I liked were the fingers on her right hand.
This was the second try, and she turned out the best . . . on paper . . . but the worst when scanned. I had to bump up her levels in photoshop to make her look less drab and a little closer to the original. This one was probably the closest to what I was trying to achieve Her nose was a happy accident. It just came out of nowhere. Hell, the whole thing was a happy accident because I obviously was not able to repeat it in any of the rest.
The third of the series and definitely my least favorite. Quite a blow to the confidence to go from the previous one to this piece of crap. She's a little too jolly green giant and she's drawn terribly. There is nothing good I have to say about this.
I've really got nothing to say about this one. She was the fourth one I colored. I was supposed to get better as I went but that didn't really happen. I peaked with the blue one and the rest was downhill.
And the final one. She was the first one I drew and the last one I colored. I had originally given up on her because I kept f'ing the drawing up. I'm sure everyone can see the multitude of pencil lines beneath the marker. But since the other four were so lackluster I figured it couldn't possibly be that much worse. And it wasn't. But it wasn't much better either. Oh woe is me.

Huntress

I crapped this out at work the other day. Then I inked her in my very non committal "not sure if I really want to shade her completely" sort of way. Hence her side is in shadow, but for some reason the arm tucked behind that side is completely lit. I messed up. Are we really surprised? But look! No Post-its! When I win one on the pencil side, I lose one on the ink side.
So, usually I just draw something, place whatever item in whatever hand it works best in for the drawing, and hope for the best. And for a second there I was proud of myself for making her right handed without even intending to. Then I remembered I always made her left handed in JLU. Then I wasn't happy anymore. But it doesn't really matter, because everyone else made her right handed anyway. It was just my little unnecessary addition. I guess that's a neat little piece of trivia. You know Lauren boarded that section IF: #1 It sucks. #2 Huntress is left handed.

Sam's new blog

I just helped Sam set up his new blog because he is a technology tard. But now I learned him good. So go check it out and you'll see this same exact picture! Woohoo! Follow the link on the side. Sam Liu's link.

Another Ariel

Just another Ariel. Still doesn't quite look like her, but oh well. I'll keep trying.

Mars

I started this drawing with the intention of coloring it using different shades of only one color. It didn't quite turn out that way. Why? Because I SUPER DUPER SUCK at coloring. Then I thought I would just try to really make the fire stand out and cast dark shadows on her. That didn't happen either. Why? Because I SUPER DUPER SUCK at coloring. Prismacolor markers are hard. Or may be I just SUPER DUPER SUCK at coloring.

The Major

Major Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. This is the Stand Alone Complex rendition in her action suit. Slightly more practical than the pink strapless deal with the leather jacket and thigh highs. But only slightly. And look! She can shoot left handed! I guess prosthetic bodies can be ambidextrous. Or maybe I just didn't think ahead before I drew it. I prefer the former to the latter.

Jessica Rabbit

Yes, I know, I know. I'm drawing on the wrong side of the paper. But the drawing on the other side was so f'd up I just had to turn it over and try again. This was drawn at work with my collection of different colored sharpees from the supply room, and a couple prismacolor pencils, also from the supply room. And a piece of superman storyboard paper, not from the supply room. High quality materials if I may say so myself.

Poison Ivy...AGAIN!

Since my first drawing of Poison Ivy was such a snorefest, I thought I'd take another stab at her. She's very rough with her fair share of post-its. You also might notice the phantom image of storyboard panels behind her. That's because she was drawn on the back of an old piece of storyboard paper. That's right, nothing but the best for my artwork. She has since been inked and I have every intention of coloring her, but intentions do not a colored drawing make. So we'll see what happens.

Suzuka

So I decided to draw Suzuka from the Outlaw Star anime. I really liked this character a lot, don't ask me why. She was just kinda bad ass without the usual obnoxiousness that anime will often times add to their bad ass women. But anyway, I drew her and I thought it was good and I thought I was soooo cool . Then work was over and I went home. Then I came back in the morning and took another look at it .... and I hated it. Story of my life. So I tried again.

I like this one better. Not as many unneccesary wrinkles in clothing or strands of hair. Just simpler. More animation friendly. I like it that way.

MAGNUM

This is Magnum, the newest addition to my family. Named for the private investigator, not the gun. Though I must admit, the magnum has got to be one of the best ways to rid yourself of zombies outside of a rocket launcher. You might be wondering: "What is he?" Well, he's a dog. Aside from that, I don't know. Neither did the people at the shelter. And, as of yesterday, neither does the veterinarian. He is a mutt. But a cute one. The lovely photos are courtesy of Elaine and her snazzy digital camera. I am still living in the dark ages with my film camera.
Here he is again, snuggled up with tramp in his bed. Tramp looks much better in this photo. As of now he is missing his nose, his tail, and is well on his way to losing both ears.
The dramatic downshot of Magnum. He has a long body. This element only adds more mystery to the question: "What is he?"
Magnum's EXTREME CLOSE UP! He's so shiny!

Cowboy Bebop

Yeah, so it's bland. This drawing was really meant to be colored. But, being that I barely had time to scan and post this image, coloring will have to wait. So until then, try not to fall asleep while looking at it.

Let's Get Dangerous

"I am the terror that flaps in the night. I am the ingrown toenail on the foot of crime. I am Darkwing Duck!" I've been watching the first season on DVD this past week. I gotta say, I liked this show as a kid, but now, I love this show even more. And the swell animation (on most episodes, not all) really made me want to draw him. Those animators must have had so much fun on this show.
When there's trouble you call DW!

Those Robotech Guys

This is an old drawing from a few years ago. At one point in time, it was my favorite thing I had ever drawn, until I looked at it again a while later and realized how messed up it was. But a few photoshop fixes here and there and it's acceptable again. Seems I had a little problem with giving Ben and Rick some elephantitis in their shoulders. And for some reason I forgot to color in their pupils. So they have creepy white eyes. Creepy, creepy white eyes.

Final Fantasy X-2

Drawing this made me realize how much I strongly dislike unnecessarily overly detailed and complicated costumes. Jeez man! Practice some restraint! I mean really, she's wearing a bikini top and a mini skirt. What purpose could the scarf possibly be serving? Seriously! Anyway... You might be thinking: Hey, what's that large triangle of dead space toward the top of the page there, Lauren. To that I reply: How the hell should I know? What do I look like? Some sort of valid artist? This must be your first time seeing this blog.

Marvel Babies!

Here's a little piece of news Elaine notified me about. This is no joke. If you don't believe me, go to the website.
http://jimhillmedia.com/blogs/jeff_lange/archive/2006/08/30/5478.aspx
Quite possibly the best show EVER!
And, no, this isn't original artwork by me.... unfortunately. I'm not genius enough to come up with this.

Ariel

In honor of the special edition DVD being released this coming October, here's Ariel .... though she might not look anything like her. I used to be able to replicate Disney characters with my eyes closed. Now after years and years of drawing burly men in tights, it doesn't come so easily. Her fin is beyond retarded. My only excuse is that I was running out of paper. So as a result, she's lopsided. Sorry Ariel.

Stuff

These are a few quick drawings done on a little pad of paper I got for free at E3.

This one looks like a badly drawn Rinoa.
The Cap'n makes it hap'n.

Thunder Thighs

Wow! What have you been eating Wonder Woman? You got CRUNK! That's me trying to use slang. And in response to a recent comment: I actually don't get to draw for fun everyday. The only recent thing on this blog is the Thundercats drawing. Most everything else was done in May, thrown on a shelf, then salvaged when I started this blog. And I've been scanning them and posting them one by one. So, in other words, I'm a big fat cheater. But I am quickly running out and pretty soon will not be posting much of anything at all.

Thundercats

Alright everybody, smile for the camera. Hey Lynxo! Over here! Over here, Lynxo! Lynxo! Look at the camera Lynxo! Jeez, are you blind or something? Oh, right. Nevermind.

Yep, that's her. I swear.

That's Saturn Girl?

Since I seem to be putting up Legion drawings currently, I might as well throw this one in there too. It's a very quickly, very badly drawn, very off model Saturn Girl. Enjoy!

Mini Legion

And here's the rest of the Legion. All except Timberwolf, that is. I just plain forgot about that guy. Woops.

Kem the Bismolian

These are a couple Matter-Eater Lads I did when I was going through my "Let's see if I can draw cutesy midgety characters" phase. Yep, more post-its. I can't draw props.

Vibe and Rocket Fred

Here they are. My two favorite characters from JLU and oh so cute! Yes, I am aware his name is actually Rocket Red and not Rocket Fred, but I like it better my way. You can thank Elaine for that little mishap. Sadly I won't be drawing them much anymore since JLU ended, but maybe I can slip Vibe into some of the backgrounds on Legion..... hmmm.

My First Posted Male Drawing-ORKA!!!!

Like Gamecock, Orka too has a wall at the WB building, though not nearly as full as the Gamecock wall. In case you are completely in the dark, it goes a little something like this: Someone finds reference for an extremely lame character, photocopies said reference, then everybody does their rendition of that character. It started with the character Gamecock. To see an example of Gamecock, go to derrickjwyatt.blogspot.com, or just click on his name in my links. After Gamecock came Orka. And here he is!
The description said Orka was more of a henchman than a leader, so I figured he would be a follower. Maybe a little on the dim side. To the point where he might follow his orca friends to his death by beaching his dumb ass. Nothing says "You're my Bro and I love ya" quite like mass suicide. And NO they are NOT SPOONING!
